Feelin' the Funk by Erik Morales. For jazz band. FJH Intermediate Jazz Ensemble. Full set (score and parts). Grade 3. Score and set of parts. Composed 2006. Duration 4:15. Published by The FJH Music Company Inc. Feelin' the Funk was inspired by the funk stylings of James Brown and such groups as Tower of Power, and Blood, Sweat, and Tears. The drummer sets the funk rhythm from the beginning as a basis for development of the style. The key to this rhythm is the emphasis on the upbeat of 4 in the first measure of the 2-bar phrase. You may also notice a slight inference to the New Orleans - street beat style in the melody. Be careful to maintain a steady medium tempo throughout the tune (quarter note = 120). The tendency to rush will make the ensemble feature at bar 89 very difficult. Eighth notes are straight throughout this chart.
